Buprenorphine / naloxone (Suboxone is the brand name) is a prescription medicine that you can take at home. It’s a weak opioid that works by reducing cravings for stronger opioids (like heroin or pain pills).
It combines buprenorphine and naloxone to treat people who are dependent on or addicted to opioids.
In a nutshell, it works by taking the place of other opioids to prevent cravings and lessen the intensity of withdrawal symptoms. It can be a highly effective treatment when combined with the right psychosocial support and counseling. Treatment begins and continues under the supervision of a physician who is specially certified to prescribe Suboxone.
Suboxone cannot be taken during pregnancy. Side effects can include faintness/dizziness, jaundice (skin turns yellow), loss of appetite, sleepiness, sleeplessness, constipation and headache. If you experience more severe side effects, like a rash or difficulty breathing, call 911 immediately.
